Your Shopify subscription is only part of the cost. Setting up your store, the payment methods you offer and what you plan to do after launch all matter too. We break the costs down into three categories.

Shopify takes care of hosting, platform security and technical updates. Depending on your store, you'll also have costs for apps, support, new features and maintaining integrations. Don't forget your own time spent managing product data, content and day-to-day operations.
What does Shopify charge for subscriptions, payments and additional services? Here's a breakdown of the main fees and conditions. Shopify fees are quoted excluding tax. VAT applies to Shopify Payments fees in Switzerland.
With annual billing, Basic costs CHF 21, Grow CHF 59 and Advanced CHF 269 per month. Plans billed monthly cost CHF 29, CHF 79 and CHF 359 respectively, with the option to cancel monthly. Shopify Plus starts at EUR 2,100 per month on a three-year contract or EUR 2,250 on a one-year contract. Variable platform fees may apply to larger merchants. Shopify doesn't charge setup fees.
Online fees for Swiss cards: Basic 2.95%, Grow 2.75%, Advanced 2.55%, Plus 2.30%. For Amex and international cards: 3.15%, 2.95%, 2.85%, 2.60%. TWINT: 1.75%, 1.65%, 1.45%, 1.35%. All rates are subject to an additional CHF 0.30 per transaction. TWINT is available to customers in Switzerland paying in CHF. See the FAQ for requirements.
Shopify charges an additional 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus for third-party payment providers. When Shopify Payments is active, Shopify Payments, Shop Pay and manual payments are exempt from this additional fee. PayPal is also exempt when Shopify Payments is the primary provider. Invoice payment apps such as PowerPay or swissbilling count as third-party providers.
Many apps are free to use, while others charge monthly fees or bill based on usage. Premium themes have a one-off cost. Bear in mind that many apps are billed in USD. When you accept payments through Shopify Payments in a currency other than your payout currency, a 2% currency conversion fee applies. Check whether each app also charges additional transaction fees.
Shopify POS is included with every paid plan. POS Pro costs CHF 69 per location per month when billed annually. Plus includes 20 POS Pro locations. A POS terminal costs CHF 258, for example, and a receipt printer CHF 304. With Tap to Pay, you can accept card payments directly on a compatible smartphone.
The cheapest plan isn't necessarily the best fit. Alongside your revenue, consider your team, B2B requirements, checkout features and integrations. Our calculator shows you when a higher plan could pay for itself through lower payment fees alone.
Starting an online store and need the essential selling features without complex requirements? Basic is a good place to start. Simple B2B processes are possible too. There are limits to checkout customisation and custom functionality, but for small teams and straightforward operations, it's often enough.
Grow offers lower payment fees and five staff accounts. You can use B2B features with up to three active catalogues, company locations and payment terms. That's enough to build some useful wholesale solutions without moving straight to Plus. What matters is whether the features cover your specific business processes.
Advanced suits stores with higher transaction volumes and larger teams. You get lower payment fees and 15 staff accounts. However, the main B2B and checkout limitations still apply. Use the calculator to see whether upgrading makes financial sense based on your actual figures.
Plus offers unlimited staff accounts and B2B catalogues, deposits, partial payments, full checkout customisation, custom apps using Shopify Functions (e.g. your own discount or shipping logic), Launchpad, higher API limits and up to nine additional stores. Lower fees aren't the only consideration. The contract length, integrations and features you need must also make sense for your business. Plus is a business decision, not just a numbers game.
Which platform makes the most financial sense for your business? Free shop software doesn't automatically mean lower overall costs.
Hosting, platform security and updates are included in your subscription. You don't need to manage the technical side of running the shop software yourself. Apps, however, can add ongoing costs. Full checkout customisation is also only available on Plus. Whether Shopify makes financial sense depends on what your business needs.
The shop software is free. You pay for hosting separately, for example from CHF 10.91 per month with Infomaniak or CHF 15.90 with Hostpoint. You're responsible for updates, security, backups and plugin compatibility, unless you pay someone to handle them. How much WooCommerce costs in the long run depends heavily on the work involved in keeping it running.
The Community Edition is free and self-hosted. Shopware Rise starts at EUR 600 and Evolve at EUR 2,400 per month, both excluding VAT and depending on revenue. Beyond is priced individually. Beyond the licence fees, you'll need to account for hosting, development, maintenance and integration requirements.

Book a callGenerally, no. Under its terms and conditions, Shopify quotes its fees excluding tax. VAT is charged on Shopify Payments fees in Switzerland. For apps and other services, the tax treatment depends on factors such as the provider and how you're invoiced. So don't just check the advertised price. Check the actual invoice too. The distinction matters for your accounting.
Usually not. Payrexx charges from 1.30% plus CHF 0.30 for TWINT on its Free plan, or 1.25% plus CHF 0.18 on its paid Standard plan. Add Shopify's extra transaction fee on Basic and you're paying over 3%. Stripe charges 1.9% plus CHF 0.30 for TWINT, before any additional Shopify fee. Always compare the total transaction cost, not just the payment provider's rates.
Yes. For example, you can offer Klarna through Shopify Payments, including payment by invoice within 30 days. Fees are 2.99% plus CHF 0.35, or 2.19% plus CHF 0.35 on Plus. Alternatively, you can integrate third-party providers such as PowerPay or swissbilling. Shopify's additional transaction fees apply to these providers. You can also accept manual payments by bank transfer. If Shopify Payments is active, there's no additional Shopify fee for manual payments.
That mainly depends on the design, features, integrations and how well your data is prepared. A simple store using a standard theme can be built much faster than a complex platform connected to several other systems. Racing Unleashed launched after around three months, while de Sede took four months. The key is a realistic project plan that also accounts for testing and data migration.
Your business must be based in Switzerland. Supported business types include sole proprietorships, limited liability companies (GmbH), general partnerships and associations. You'll need a CHF account with a Swiss bank or a EUR account that supports SEPA. Fintech and multi-currency accounts are excluded. The required verification must be completed within 90 days of your first order, so have your business documents ready.
Yes. With Basic, Grow and Advanced, you can choose monthly or annual billing. Monthly billing gives you more flexibility, while annual subscriptions cost less but involve a longer commitment. You can generally switch plans. Shopify Plus has separate contracts lasting one or three years. Before switching, check that your existing features and integrations will still be supported.
